Nitshill

Glasgow City

A southwestern district of Glasgow, Nitshill lies between the Levern Water to the west and the M77 motorway to the east, 5 miles (8 km) southwest of the city centre. It developed in the 19th century as a distinct settlement in association with various mineral industries, including coal mining, and has an industrial estate with light engineering and textiles. A monument remembers the sixty-one men and boys killed by an explosion in the Victoria Colliery here on the 15th March, 1851. Formed in 1877, the Scottish Asbestos Company was a major employer producing asbestos packing, insulation and rope at their Levenshields Works closing in the 1990s just as the health effects of working with asbestos were becoming prominent. Nitshill Railway Station opened in 1848.
