Portmoak

Perth and Kinross

The former farm of Portmoak near the southeast corner of Loch Leven, Perth and Kinross, was purchased by the Scottish Gliding Union in 1967 for the purpose of developing an airfield. Situated in the Parish of Portmoak, the farmstead stands next to the site of an ancient churchyard at the centre of which stood a chapel dedicated to St Moak. A thousand-year-old Celtic cross-slab (the Portmoak Stone), found here in 1976, is now located within the modern Parish Church of Portmoak which stands on higher ground between the villages of Scotlandwell and Kinnesswood. This church, rebuilt in 1832, replaced the earlier chapel in 1661 and in its kirkyard is a monument to the 'Gentle Poet of Lochleven', Michael Bruce (1746-67).
