Tong

(Thunga, Tunga)
Western Isles

A crofting township of the Outer Hebrides, Tong (Gael: Thunga or Tunga) lies 2½ miles (4 km) northeast of Stornoway on the east coast of Lewis. The settlement extends east to the Aird of Tong (Gael: Aird Thunga) which lies above the rocky shore. A redundant shop and post office here has been converted for use as a church by the small Scottish Episcopal community in Lewis (2000). It is to this village that American President and business tycoon Donald J. Trump claims his Scottish ancestry, through his mother Mary Anne MacLeod who was born here in 1912. Mary Anne was raised in the village until she emigrated to the USA in 1930.
