Keills

Argyll and Bute

A hamlet on the A846 road in the northeast of the island of Islay, Keills is located a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Port Askaig. The settlement takes its name from a ruined Mediaeval chapel (Cill Chaluim Chille, or St. Columba's Chapel) located in fields to the northwest. The first houses here built in the 1820s for linen weavers, brought from Glasgow to establish an industry based on locally-grown flax. However the preponderance of homes in the modern village is public housing built in the 1960s. Keills benefits from a primary school and a football pitch. There is also an ancient cross located here.
