A location with a ruined 13th-century castle and a restored 12th-century church, Cruggleton lies on the Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, 2 miles (3 km) south of Garlieston and 2½ miles (4 km) northeast of Whithorn. Cruggleton (or Rigg) Bay and Cruggleton Woods lie to the north, while Cruggleton Point projects into Wigtown Bay to the east.
