A small settlement at a crossroads between minor roads in The Machars of Galloway, Loch Head lies at the northeastern end of Elrig Loch, 2¼ miles (3.5 km northwest of Mochrum. There is a cairn in a field to the south, while the Carlin Stone lies a quarter-mile (0.4 km) to the northwest.
