Heogan

Shetland

A scattered crofting settlement on the west coast of Bressay in Shetland, Heogan overlooks Bressay Sound and Lerwick Harbour beyond. Developed as a fishing station from the late 19th Century, by the 1930s it was the site of a guano and fish-oil works, which has subsequently developed into a substantial fish-meal factory, now the largest private employer on the island. Fish is landed at one of several piers which are operated by Lerwick Port Authority.
