North Boisdale

(Baghasdal)
Western Isles

A linear crofting settlement on the southwest coast of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, North Boisdale (Gael: Baghasdal) is located 3 miles (5 km) west southwest of Lochboisdale. South Boisdale lies immediately to the southeast. Kelp was an important industry here, gathered for centuries to fertilise the machair. A factory overlooking the little offshore island of Orosay processed seaweed into alginate until 1980 with small-scale production continuing until the 2000s.
