Ardroil

(Eadar dha Fhadhail)
Western Isles

A small crofting township of the Uig district on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Ardroil (Gael: Eadar dha Fhadhail) overlooks Uig Sands from the southeast and is located 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of Timsgarry. The Lewis chessmen were found within a stone cist in the dunes here in 1831 and two large wooden chessmen, carved in oak by Stephen Hayward of Tain, stand here to commemorate that event.
