Kildonan

(Cill Donnain)
Western Isles

A small settlement amidst the machair on the west coast of South Uist, Kildonan (Gael: Cill Donnain) lies next to Loch Kildonan at the head of Glen Kildonan. The ruins of a 12th-century church can be seen here and a sizeable museum (Taigh-tasgaidh Chill Donnain) is located in a former school on the east side of the A 865 road. The birthplace of Jacobite heroine Flora Macdonald (1722-90) lies at Milton a half-mile (1 km) to the south.
