A location and cottage in the Galloway Forest, close to the Queen's Way and overlooking the Palnure Burn, Dunkitterick lies 9 miles (14 km) southwest of New Galloway. Dunkitterick was the birthplace of classical scholar Alexander Murray on 22nd October 1775. He went on to become Professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Edinburgh in 1812 but died in the following year aged only 37.
