Dalmochie

Aberdeenshire

A location on the edge of Pannanich Wood in Aberdeenshire, Dalmochie lies on an old drove road which crosses the B976 a half-mile (1 km) east of Ballater. This was the site of a logging camp built by Newfoundland lumberjacks in 1940. With need for timber during World War II, and many British forestry workers having joined the armed forces, the Government appealed to Canada for assistance. Known as Glenmuick Camp, the lumberjacks clear-felled the nearby woodlands but the remains of the camp can still be seen amongst the rejuvenated forest. In 2005, the Ballater Historic Forestry Project Association was created to raise public awareness of the site, with the ultimate aim of restoring the log-cabins in which the Newfoundlanders lived.
