A location the Sutherland District of Highland Council Area, Meikle Ferry lies on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Edderton and 4½ miles (7 km) northwest of Tain. A ferry once left the pier here for Ferry Point at the end of the Ness of Portnaculter, a finger-like projection from the southern shore of the Firth. Until the building of the Bonar Bridge in 1812, this was the only means of crossing. Yet it was a dangerous journey, evidenced by the loss of 99 lives when an overcrowded ferry-boat sank on 16th August 1809. It remained an unpopular option and was rendered completely redundant by the Dornoch Firth Bridge.
An RAF station here was established in 1942 to provide servicing and repair facilities for flying boats. This operated until 1946.
