Sponish

(Spònais)
Western Isles

A small settlement with a small harbour and a pier in the northeast of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Sponish (Gael: Spònais) lies a half-mile (1 km) north northeast of Lochmaddy. Sponish lies on a peninsula of the same name which separates Loch Houram from Loch Maddy. The B-listed Sponish House (Taigh Spònais) is a substantial three-storey property dating from the early 19th century. A seaweed processing company operated from Sponish House between 1956 and 1986. On the foreshore nearby is the Hut of the Shadows, a traditional-style building containing a camera obscura, constructed in 1997.
