A peripheral public housing estate of Glasgow which was constructed on the policies of the former Cardowan House in the 1930s, Cardowan is located in North Lanarkshire, a half-mile (0.8 km) southeast of Stepps and 5 miles (8 km) east northeast of Glasgow city centre. It was extended in the years following the Second World War, associated with the growth of Cardowan Colliery, which had opened in 1928. This closed in 1983, but further housing was developed thereafter.
The original settlement of Cardowan lay a mile (1.5 km) south of the current estate, close to the northeastern corner of the Glasgow Fort retail development, although little remains.
