Happendon

South Lanarkshire

A location in South Lanarkshire, Happendon lies next to the M74 motorway, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) northeast of Douglas. A small settlement lies to the north of Happendon Bridge, which carries the B7078 across the Douglas Water. Happendon Wood lies to the north, while Happendon Services (also known as Cairn Lodge) opened 1994 and are accessible only indirectly between Junctions 11 and 12 of the motorway. A sizeable prisoner-of-war camp was built on the Douglas Estate to the southwest to house German and Italian captives during the Second World War, but this has been largely lost beneath the motorway and opencast coal workings.
