Aith

Shetland

A small settlement at the head of the Wick of Aith on the island of Fetlar in Shetland, Aith lies a mile (1.6 km) east southeast of Houbie. In 2002, Channel 4 television's Time Team came here to investigate the Giant's Grave, which was shown to be a rare Viking Ship burial. Local legend suggested that a dying Norsemen had been washed ashore during a storm and had asked to be buried in his longship along with his treasure. Although the burial had been plundered in the past, an intricately-designed bronze brooch was discovered, evidence that it was a Viking woman, not a man, who had been buried here. Time Team also excavated a Viking house at Gord in Houbie.
