Austin Tartan

A surname associated with Caithness in the north of Scotland, the Austins became a minor sept of Clan Keith. In Scotland, the name may derive from Ostin - Norse for 'hill settlement'. More generally in Europe, the name is thought to derive from Augustine, diminutive of Augustus, and may have spread with the monks of the Augustinian Order, or Black Friars, who were followers of St. Augustine (AD 354 - 430). This variant of the name probably came to Scotland with the Normans in the 11th or 12th century.
