Unst Airport

(Baltasound Airport, Ordale Airport)

A small and little used airfield on the island of Unst in Shetland, Unst Airport is located at Ordale, a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Baltasound. The single well-maintained asphalt runway extends to 640m (2099 feet) in a WNW-ESE direction. Built by the Royal Engineers in 1968, this is the northernmost airfield in the UK. Its early years were busy, serving as a staging post for oil-workers between Aberdeen and rigs offshore. However, this work became centred at Scatsta Airport on the Shetland Mainland, and Unst quickly declined in importance. By 1996, the airfield was effectively mothballed and is now used only occasionally for training and emergencies. Facilities include a terminal building and an aircraft hangar. Unst Airport has the International Air Transport Association (IATA) location code "UNT".
