Ravelrig Hill

A much-denuded summit in the SW of the City of Edinburgh, Ravelrig Hill rises to 215m (705 feet) on a ridge which extends east from Dalmahoy Hill, a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Balerno. The western slopes of the hill have been removed by quarrying. The Ravelrig Quarries have operated since the 19th C. and are currently operated by Lafarge Tarmac, extracting dolerite (whinstone) for use as road aggregate. Dalmahoy Hill Plantation lies on the northwestern slopes of the hill, while the A70 road and the Water of Leith lie to the south.
