Carse of Gowrie

The flat 'kerselands' of the Carse of Gowrie, rarely exceeding a height of 15m (50 feet) above sea level, occupy a narrow strip of land in southeast Perth and Kinross between the Tay estuary in the south and the Sidlaw Hills to the north. Traversed by the main road linking Perth and Dundee, the rich farmlands of the Carse are sheltered from cold north winds. During the post-glacial period this area was under water but in the 18th century it was extensively drained by local land owners who planted orchards of apples, plums and pears. The chief settlements of the Carse of Gowrie are Errol, Inchture, Longforgan, Leetown and Glencarse.
