Ardoch Roman Camp

Located to the northeast of Braco in SW Perth and Kinross, Ardoch is the site of one of the most important surviving monuments of the Roman period in Britain. A fort with remarkably preserved earthworks and a series of six overlapping marching camps have been identified as important military installations built by the Roman Army at various times between AD 80 and AD 200 as the Roman frontier advanced and retreated. The survival of the fort owes considerably to the landowner Sir William Stirling, who enclosed the area in the later 18th C. to prevent its destruction by ploughing.
