Butterburn

Butterburn is the almost-extinct name for a district of Dundee, which is today merged with Coldside, 1¼ miles (2 km) north northwest of the city centre. The Butter Burn is an alternative name for the Dens Burn in this area. Butterburn School on Strathmartine Road was built in 1883 but is now gone and Butterburn United Presbyterian Church, which opened in 1865, was demolished in 2007. On the opposite side of Hill Street, the later 20th-C. housing blocks of Butterburn Square remain. Butterburn Court was a 23-storey public housing tower on Derby Street, built in 1971 to the designs of James Parr and Partners, but demolished in 2013. Its twin was Bucklemaker Court, located a short distance to the north and demolished at the same time.
