Parish of Moffat

Moffat is a parish, which lies in Dumfries and Galloway Council Area, some 16 miles (27 km) northeast of Thornhill and 17 miles (28 km) north of Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway.

It is located in the old county of Dumfriesshire, which disappeared following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1974.

The parish has an area of 174.7 sq. km (67.4 sq. miles) and includes the settlement of Moffat. Moffat has 7 neighbouring parishes; namely Crawford, Eskdalemuir, Ettrick, Kirkpatrick-Juxta, Tweedsmuir, Wamphray and Yarrow. The boundaries of this parish were modified among significant changes recommended by the Boundary Commissioners after the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889.
