James Hall

1800 - 1854

Advocate and amateur artist. The youngest son of Sir James Hall of Dunglass (1761 - 1832) and brother of traveller Captain Basil Hall (1788 - 1844), Hall studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He was admitted as an advocate in 1821. However, Hall is remembered as a patron of the arts and amateur artist, painting portraits and Scottish landscapes including The Pentland Hills near Edinburgh, Tantallon Castle and The Real Scenery of the Bride of Lammermuir. He was a friend of Sir David Wilkie (1785 - 1841).

In the early 1840s, Hall stood unsuccessfully for the parliamentary seat of Taunton in Devon (England).

He died at Ashiestiel in the Scottish Borders. The University of Edinburgh holds some of his papers.
