Overview of Old County of Clackmannanshire

Once the smallest county in Scotland, Clackmannanshire lay on the north shore of the Firth of Forth and extended to only 54.6 sq. miles (141 sq. km) between Stirlingshire, Perthshire and Fife. Fertile carseland adjacent to the river gives way to the steep topography of the Ochil Hills to the north. Its main settlements were Alloa, Alva, Clackmannan, Dollar and Tillicoultry, while its principal river was the Devon. In 1974 the county was incorporated into Central Region as Clackmannan District, before being re-established as a unitary authority in the local government reorganisation of 1996.
