Located in the grounds of Dundee's Ninewells Hospital, Maggie's centre aims to help people affected by cancer and their families and friends. It is the third of its type in Scotland, named after Maggie Keswick Jencks (1941-95) who conceived the idea. This unusual structure was designed by the famous international architect Frank Gehry, noted for the Bilbao Guggenheim. It was his first building in the UK. His unique traits are evident in this building; namely not one of its walls are straight and the stunning concertina roof, of timber and stainless steel, which varies in height and pitch. Opened on 25th September 2003 by singer and activist Sir Bob Geldof, Gehry's building is intended to be stimulating and uplifting, on a site overlooking the Firth of Tay.
It was named building of the year in 2004 by the Royal Fine Art Commission.
