Newbyth
East Lothian

A hamlet in East Lothian, Newbyth lies on the Peffer Burn, 2 miles (3 km) north of East Linton. The hamlet comprises converted agricultural steadings which once served Newbyth House. Newbyth House, which dates from 1817, was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1972 but was subsequently restored. Newbyth was the birthplace of General Sir David Baird of Newbyth (1757 - 1829), a hero of military campaigns in India and during the Napoleonic wars who was given a baronetcy in 1809.
