Baillieston

Glasgow City

Situated 7 miles (11 km) east of Glasgow city centre, to the north of the River Clyde and within the city boundary, the former mining town of Baillieston is now a residential area which was annexed to the city of Glasgow in 1975. Glasgow Zoo, formerly Calderpark Zoo, lay to the south and was opened in 1946. In the 1960s the development of the motorway system gave rise to the Baillieston interchange.

Baillieston House once stood towards the west of the old village but was consumed by fire in 1964 and demolished. Part of the site is now occupied by Bannerman High School (built 1973).
