A scattered community to the W of Nithsdale (Dumfries and Galloway), Glenesslin (once Glenessland) is situated around the Glenesslin Burn, 2 miles (3 km) west of Dunscore and 9 miles (15 km) northwest of Dumfries. There was a small school here in the 19th century, with the site of an ancient chapel nearby.
