Deriving their name from the parish of Livingstone in West Lothian, the Livingstones can trace their ancestry back to a 12th century grant of these lands to a Saxon named Leving or Leuing. The MacLeays of Appin sometimes anglicized their name to Livingstone, the explorer David Livingstone being of this line.
