Cadell

(Caddell, Calder, Cawdale, Cawdor)

Caddell, Calder, Cawdale or Cawdor are alternative Highland and Lowland forms of this surname which is on record at least since the 16th century when it was common in Edinburgh. The name is also to be found in Aberdeen, Banff and the Kilmadock parish, Dunblane. The Cadells of Grange and Cockenzie were noted iron-masters, who were founding partners in the noted Carron Ironworks. That family includes explorer Francis Cadell (1822-79), geologist Henry Moubray Cadell (1860 - 1934), artist F.C.B. Cadell (1883 - 1937), actress Jean Cadell (1884 - 1967), architect William A. Cadell (b.1933) and Patrick Cadell (1941 - 2010), who was Keeper of the Records of Scotland.
