The last remnant of HM Factory Gretna, an immense military-industrial complex which stretched for 9 miles (14 km) along the northern shore of the Solway Firth, DM Eastriggs lies a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Eastriggs and 4 miles (6.5 km) west southwest of Gretna. Although most of the old factory was cleared during the 1920s, the remaining buildings were converted to form an ammunition dump in 1939.
DM Eastriggs is now run by the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency, an executive agency of the British Ministry of Defence. Previously a highly secretive installation, it is only since 2005 that the facility and its associated railway sidings have been recorded on Ordnance Survey maps.
