Germiston

An small area forming the southeastern part of the district of Springburn in N Glasgow, Germiston lies to the east of Royston, 1½ miles (2.5 km) northeast of Glasgow city centre. During Glasgow's industrial growth in the early 19th century, this area was famous for locomotive production, with the Germiston Works being one of its most famous workshops. As the locomotive industry declined, the area concentrated on the manufacture of asbestos and, more recently, the production of calcium silicate as a safer alternative for the manufacture of roofing tiles and insulation. To the east of the area lies a gas works with two sizeable gasometers, while to the south lies the M8 motorway.
