Neptune's Staircase

A majestic flight of eight locks, Neptune's Staircase is located close to the western end of the Caledonian Canal at Banavie, 2 miles (3 km) north northeast of Fort William. These locks represent the most significant on the canal, lifting sea-going vessels 19.5m (64 feet), and were constructed between 1807 and 1811. Originally operated by hand, the locks were mechanised in 1968.
