Mercat Cross

Standing in the middle of the now-pedestrianised High Street, the Dunfermline Mercat Cross was first mentioned in the historical record in 1396. The current structure dates in part from the 17th century, but has suffered from its numerous relocations. Having become a barrier to traffic, the shaft and unicorn finial were built into the building to the southwest of its current location. In 1868, the cross was re-assembled with the inclusion of a mounting for the unicorn carved by Dunfermline-born artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton (1821 - 1901). For a time the cross was sited within the railings of the County Buildings, but was again moved on more than one occasion before being restored to approximately its original location during the pedestrianisation works of 1992.
