Flowing north then west, it passes through North Balloch and Glengennet before turning south and passing Barr, Penwherry and Colmonell. It enters the sea at Ballantrae Bay, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) south of Ballantrae. Its principal tributaries are the Water of Assel, the Duisk River and the Water of Tig.
