Scarton Point

A headland in the extreme southeast of the island of Stroma in the Pentland Firth, Scarton Point lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east of Uppertown. Surrounded by low cliffs, the island's cemetery is located here. Within this cemetery is the burial vault of the Kennedy of Carmuck, which dates from 1672. The salty sea spray is said to have mummified the bodies within and these became a tourist attraction in the 18th Century.
