Fossil Grove

Located in the Victoria Park to the west of Partick (Glasgow City), the Fossil Grove is the remains of a 325 million year old forest which was discovered during the construction of a pathway in the park in 1887. The ten tree stumps, with root systems and associated fallen trunks, date from the Carboniferous period and represent the examples of the extinct tree-like clubmoss species Lepidodendron veltheimianum, forests of which were important in forming coal. Respected amateur palaeobotanist Robert Kidston (1852 - 1924) was involved in the excavation. The stumps are now covered by a glass-roofed museum building, which opened on 1st January 1890. The grove is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is managed by Glasgow City Council.
