Comiston

A southern residential suburb of Edinburgh, Comiston lies 3 miles (5 km) south southwest of the city centre. Once the estate of the Forrest family, it was acquired in 1715 and retained until 1928 after which it was developed for private housing. Neat bungalows and semi-detached properties abound, each with bay windows and fine views to the north. The B-listed Comiston House (1815) remains on Camus Avenue, although was converted into flats in 1990. Nearby are its stables (also 1815) and a tower doocot, which was built at least 200 years earlier to serve an older house on this site. Comiston is also the site of a series of springs which were gathered together in Comiston Spring House and piped to supply fresh water to the Old Town of Edinburgh from 1680.
