Sawney Bean's Cave

(Sawny Bean's Cave)

A partially hidden cave within the picturesque Balcreuchan Port on the northern side of Bennane Head, 2½ miles (4 km) southwest of Lendalfoot and 3 miles (5 km) north northeast of Ballantrae in South Ayrshire. This was home to Sawney Bean and his extensive family in the 16th century, who are said to have murdered and cannibalised more than a thousand people over a span of 25 years. Visitors can descend from the car park above the cliffs via a steep path to access the cave on the north side of the bay. Following a scramble over large rocks, the narrow entrance gives way to a relatively large cave which extends for some depth into the rock face.
