Gleann Mor

(Gleann Mòr, Gleann Mhor, Glen Mor)

A deep ice-carved valley which cuts across the island of Hirta in St. Kilda, Gleann Mor (Glen Mor or Gleann Mhor) lies between Mullach Mor and Mullach Bi, a mile (1.5 km) west northwest of the Village. A Sunderland flying boat crashed near the head of the valley on the 8th June 1944, with the loss of its crew of ten, who are commemorated on a memorial in the island's little church. The wreckage was subsequently dismantled and buried.
