Lasswade Centre

(Lasswade High School)

A school and community campus at Hopefield in Bonnyrigg (Midlothian), the Lasswade Centre takes its name from Lasswade High School which moved to this site in 1956. The present building was constructed on the playing fields of the old High School at a cost of £38 million and was opened in 2013 by First Minister Alex Salmond (b.1954). The Lasswade Centre brings together community facilities such as gyms, dance studios, squash courts, a 25-m swimming pool, meeting rooms, a library and adult learning resources and a school on the same site. Once the new school was open, state-of-the-art all-weather sports facilities were built on the site of the former school, which had been demolished.

The striking four-storey building was designed by Glasgow-based Cooper Cromar architects. It has education and community wings with the entrance hall between the two, incorporating reception facilities, a library, exhibition space, café and crèche. There is also a Gymnastics Academy intended to provide a centre of excellence for gymnastics within the East of Scotland.

Lasswade High School is a local authority non-denominational secondary school which serves the Bonnyrigg-Lasswade conurbation. It has a roll of 1529 pupils (2015), divided into four houses; namely St Anne's, St Leonard's, Melville and Mount Esk.

There was a parish school in Lasswade from 1615. Professor William Tennant (1784 - 1848) was schoolmaster 1816-19. A new two-room school building opened in 1843, The Board School dates from 1881. The secondary department moved to Bonnyrigg in 1956, becoming known as Lasswade High School. The primary school moved to Viewbank in Lasswade in 1977.

The Lasswade Centre was one of the first educational facilities to be built under the Scottish Futures Trust Schools for the Future programme. It is run by Midlothian Council.
