A grand circular monument surrounded by Callendar Wood, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southeast of Callendar House, in Falkirk, the Forbes Mausoleum was built in 1816 as the last resting place of Sir William Forbes (1743 - 1815). Designed in the Classical style by Archibald Elliot (1761 - 1823), it features twelve fluted Doric columns set on a rusticated round base. Above the entrance is a verse in Greek by the poet Lucian. Forbes was later joined by several other family members and estate workers are buried in an adjacent enclosure.
The mausoleum was A-listed in 1972 but placed on the Buildings-at-Risk Register in 2008.
