Broomieknowe Tunnel

(Lasswade Tunnel)

An abandoned railway tunnel in Midlothian, the Broomieknowe Tunnel passes beneath Broomieknowe between Lasswade and Bonnyrigg. Opened in 1867, it was designed by Sir Thomas Bouch (1822-80) for the Esk Valley Railway which was built primarily to service local paper mills but closed in 1964. The tunnel was sealed, but the western portal of the tunnel can be seen near the end of Westmill Road, above the River North Esk. The eastern portal is also extant, but inaccessible, behind Rockville Terrace to the west of Bonnyrigg High Street. Built on an S-shaped alignment at the cost of £20,994, this brick-lined tunnel extends to 393m / 1290 feet in length.

Lasswade Station once lay immediately next to the western portal, while Broomieknowe Station (serving Bonnyrigg) lay 200m (660 feet) to the east of the eastern portal, on the opposite side of Bonnyrigg High Street. The tunnel is now maintained by the Highways Agency Historical Railways Estate, formerly British Railways Board (Residuary).
