A short spur from the M90 motorway in Fife, A823 (M) takes vehicles into the Dunfermline - Rosyth conurbation. At a mile (1.5 km) in length, this is the second-shortest motorway in Scotland, next to the M898 in Renfrewshire. It opened with the first section of the M90 motorway in 1964. The engineers were Mott, Hay & Anderson working in partnership with Fife County Council, and the contractors were Whatlings
