Castlehill Moss

An extensive area of blanket bog located around Castlehill in the centre of the island of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Castlehill Moss is situated 2 miles (3 km) east of Islay Airport. Peat is extracted from here by Diageo Plc for drying malted barley at their Port Ellen Maltings, thus infusing malt whisky with some of its distinctive flavour. The site was recommended by Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot) following the environmental conflict over the use of the nearby Duich Moss.
