Kingsknowes Hotel

A small hotel occupies a prominent position at the end of Kingsknowe Drive in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, Kingsknowes Hotel was built in 1869 as the home of local mill owner Adam Lees Cochrane overlooking his Netherdale Mill in the valley below. This three-storey baronial mansion in red sandstone was designed by William Hay (1818-88) and the magnificent circular conservatory by MacKenzie and Moncur was added in the early years of the 20th Century. The house was converted into a 12-bedroom hotel in the 1960s and is now A-listed. The conservatory was restored in 2005. Inside, the grand entrance hall features a three-arch Corinthian arcaded screen and a large stained glass window on the stair. Rooms feature fine plasterwork, polychrome marble chimney-pieces and wood panelling. The business now employs more than 20 people.
