Beechwood

A residential district of Dundee, Beechwood lies 1½ miles (2.5 km) northwest of the city centre, to the south of Dunsinane Industrial Estate. Beechwood House was the property of the Cox family, who ran nearby Camperdown Works for the production of jute. In 1934 the land was purchased by Dundee Corporation and the mansion demolished to make way for new homes that allowed slums to be cleared in the city centre. The tenements here suffered from social problems and were themselves mostly demolished in the later 20th C. to be replaced by neat semi-detached private houses in red brick. The street names follow a theme, which was entirely invented to mirror the name of the old house; namely Calderwood Close, Cedarwood Drive, Maplewood Drive, Hazelwood Close and Redwood Avenue.
