Lawside

A residential district with fine views of Dundee which occupies the western slopes of the Dundee Law, a mile (1.8 km) northwest of the city centre. It is bounded by Lochee Road to the west. The steeply sloping site is occupied by four-flat blocks developed as public housing during the inter-war period, some with a common stair, others with independent external access. Most have been sold through right-to-buy legislation. Lawside Academy began here as an independent school for girls in 1907, opened by the Sister of Mercy next to their Lawside Convent. It quickly became co-educational and moved to the north of the city in 1966 before closing in 2007. Lawside Convent and Diocesan Centre and St. Joseph's Retreat Centre remained on Lawside Road until the site was sold by the Roman Catholic church in 2022. The slopes to the west are occupied by traditional Victorian tenements and fine villas.
